King Sahassamalla was a ruler who reigned for a short period during the latter part of the Polonnaruwa era in Sri Lanka. Having arrived from the Kalinga country, he ascended the throne amidst a complex political climate where governing power in Lanka was shifting from the king to the ministers and officials.

Early Life and Ascension to the Throne

Sahassamalla was born in the Kalinga country. He was brought to Lanka by two Adhikaris who opposed the power of General Kirti, the chief general of Queen Lilavati. With the support of these Adhikaris, General Kirti was assassinated, and Sahassamalla was enthroned on August 23, 1200 CE. It is noteworthy that this anointment marks the first royal anointment in the history of Lanka for which a specific date is mentioned.

Reign and Political Climate

Sahassamalla’s reign was short and represents an era in Sri Lanka where governing power gradually shifted from the kings to the ministers and officials. During this period, Adhikaris and other powerful noblemen became extremely influential in the state’s decision-making process. Even King Sahassamalla’s enthronement was an act by two such powerful Adhikaris. There was no political stability during his rule, and power struggles were constant.

Demise

Unfortunately, King Sahassamalla did not have the opportunity to reign for a long period. He was assassinated by one of the Adhikaris who helped bring him to Lanka and place him on the throne, named Aabo. After the king’s death, Aabo enthroned Queen Kalyanavati, the second chief consort of King Nissankamalla.

Legacy

King Sahassamalla’s short reign marks an important turning point in Sri Lankan history. It serves as a mirror to an era where the king’s power waned, and the political influence of ministers and officials significantly increased. The recording of the exact date of his anointment is an important factor for future historical studies. King Sahassamalla’s eventful reign clearly illustrates the political instability and power struggles that prevailed during the latter part of the Polonnaruwa Kingdom.
