Prince Manavamma, son of King Kassapa II, was a great ruler who won the throne of Lanka with the support of the Pallava king of India. He was known as a very righteous king.

Introduction

King Manavamma (684-718 CE) was an important ruler of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. As the son of King Kassapa II, he overcame numerous challenges to ascend the throne and subsequently governed the country as a righteous ruler.

Early Life and Flight to India

Prince Manavamma was the son of King Kassapa II. Due to political instability that arose during the reign of King Dathopatissa II, Prince Manavamma was forced to flee to India.

Experiences in India

During his time in India, Prince Manavamma studied various martial arts and became an excellent warrior. He later joined the army of the powerful Pallava king in South India, winning the Pallava king’s trust and favor through his bravery and skill. This period provided Prince Manavamma with a broad understanding of military tactics and statesmanship.

Accession to the Throne

With the full support of the Pallava king and an army, Prince Manavamma returned to Lanka. Fighting against King Hatthadatha, who was then ruling Lanka, Prince Manavamma defeated and killed him, ascending the Anuradhapura throne in 684 CE.

Reign and Legacy

History records that King Manavamma ruled the country very righteously after ascending the throne. During his reign, peace and stability were established in the country. He maintained close ties with the Pallava Empire, which influenced Sri Lanka’s cultural and political spheres. King Manavamma’s reign is considered a period that solidified the power of the Lambakarna Dynasty.
