King Bhuvanekabahu VI
King Bhuvanekabahu VI, also known as Prince Sapumal, was an important ruler of the Kotte Dynasty. He ascended the throne after overthrowing King Jayabahu II and ruled his kingdom by successfully facing internal challenges.
Early Life and Ascension to the Throne
During the reign of King Parakramabahu VI, Prince Sapumal was appointed as the ruler of Jaffna. After the death of King Parakramabahu VI, his grandson, Prince Jayabahu, ascended to power as King Jayabahu II. Prince Sapumal was displeased by this event, returned to Kotte, assassinated King Jayabahu II, and seized the throne. He then became king under the name Bhuvanekabahu VI.
Reign and Suppression of Rebellions
Angered by the assassination of King Jayabahu II, the people in the areas near the Kalu Ganga and Walawa Ganga rebelled against King Bhuvanekabahu VI. To suppress this rebellion, the king sent his brother, Prince Ambulugala. It took Prince Ambulugala four years to completely quell the rebellion. Despite these internal challenges, King Bhuvanekabahu VI ruled his kingdom.
